Fairytale
Directed by: Aleksandr Sokourov
Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini, and Churchill wander in purgatory, awaiting the hypothetical opening of the gates of paradise. They appear in several versions of themselves, sometimes aware of their death, sometimes mulling over their plans for conquest and grandeur, exchanging invectives. The three dictators parade before their people, represented as tormented waves of indistinct figures. Churchill sees the gates of paradise open, for him alone.

Press
“It’s easy to label anything vaguely psychedelic a ‘trip,’ but this journey into the depths of the political afterlife certainly deserves that, and more.”
David Jenkins, Little White Lies
“It’s a pleasure to see Sokurov return in such playful form.”
Guy Lodge, Variety
“As with most of [Aleksandr Sokurov’s] work, it exerts a hypnotic spell that one can resist and become bored by, or surrender to and enjoy a singular, mystical, and aesthetically striking experience.”
Dennis Harvey, 48 Hills
