“Lucian Pintilie is the best Romanian director, but he hasn’t been able to film in his own country for many years, and he made this film in Yugoslavia. The film stands out for its powerful and sober depiction of this “house of the dead” where convicts languish on reprieve, gradually destroyed by violence and madness.”
