Biography
Laura Carreira is a Portuguese filmmaker based in Edinburgh, Scotland. After studying film, she launched her career with her first short film, "Red Hill" (2019), which won the New Visions Award at the 73rd Edinburgh International Film Festival and was nominated for Best Short Film at the BAFTA Scotland Awards. The success of this first film allowed Laura to gain recognition in the film industry.
Her next short film, "The Shift," received international acclaim, premiering at the 2020 Venice International Film Festival. The film was nominated for the European Film Awards and the London Critics' Circle Film Awards and won the New Talent Award at the IndieLisboa Film Festival in 2021. The film stood out for its exploration of working conditions in modern environments, a theme that would also be central to her subsequent projects.
Laura Carreira's first feature film, "On Falling," marked a turning point in her career. Produced by Sixteen Films and BRO Cinema, with support from the BFI, BBC Films, Screen Scotland, ICA, and Goodfellas, the film made its world debut at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival in 2024, before having its European premiere at the San Sebastián Film Festival. There, it won the Silver Shell for Best Director. The film also won the Sutherland Award at the 68th BFI London Film Festival, cementing Laura Carreira's reputation as one of the most promising voices in contemporary cinema. In 2022, she was named one of Scotland's Rising Stars by Screen International magazine.
Laura is currently working on her second feature film, in development with Film4.
